Growing Up

Remember how I said that we have a beautiful nursery that has never been used, save for the middle of the night dirty butt changes? Well... Not so much... Last night, the kids spent their first night in their crib.

After the first hour of crying, I was okay. (You thought I was going to let them cry??? Are you nuts??? They were peachy keen!) Maya woke up once at 2:30am and then Bobby woke up once at 5am. They slept peacefully and I listened to them on the baby monitor until I fell asleep.

It's the first night (since I've been able to have them with me) that I havent had them by my side. It's also the first night that Nicholas, Sophia, and Alexander's box hasnt been within arm's reach. After we laid them down and I wept because I couldnt just reach into the co-sleeper and feel them, breathing and safe, I reached out and touched their box, as I always do, and suddenly, it just felt wrong that they were with me and not with Bobby and Maya. So, I took it in and placed it on their high boy. It was hard, let me tell you. As Peter said, it's the first night (and not the last) that they all slept in the nursery.

Why did this come about? Did we designate 3 months old as the night they moved out? No... Of course not... We were talking and were commenting on how odd it was that they would sleep soundly if placed in our bed, even if we werent holding them. (I routinely had one on the bed while I fed the other, so that I didnt have to let go of the baby being fed in order to take care of the other if they got fussy.) So Peter mentioned that, perhaps, it is because we have a mattress and not just a piece of covered foam, like the co-sleeper and pack-n-play. Would they sleep better on a mattress, such as in the crib?

Guess he was right.

Although now it bring home how true that old adage is: they grow up so fast.

Aww that is tough I can imagine! If its too difficult you could move their cribs into your room. I plan to do that for the first year, but I heard its easier for the babies sometimes to sleep in their own rom and you do have the monitor.

The coolest part of sleeping on their own is that they have ach other :)

I'm so glad that they got a good night's sleep - I'm sure it was rough on you more than anything! So glad that all of the babies got to spend the night together. Hugs.

Michele, I am so glad they can all sleep together. Letting go sometimes is the hardest part. I am sure it was tough letting them sleep in a different room.

At times, I wished my babies were able to sleep on their own. We too do not go along with the 'crying it out' routine. None of our babies has been able to sleep without me or my husband. Thus, we've never used a crib. If they had slept in the crib without crying, I'd welcome it. :)

Peace, my friend.

oh michele! i know how very hard this was for you--we too experienced our first night of baby sleeping in her own room earlier this week. it was HARD! she didn't cry even one peep, she slept all night long...i cried and cried! i'm so glad bobby and maya slept so well on their own, and like an earlier poster said, they always have each other to snuggle.

catching up on your other posts...isn't it totally nuts that nothing is as we meant for it to be but we still wouldn't change it.

Awww. Now you made me tear up. Darn pregnancy hormones!

I'm glad they had a restful night in the nursery, and I hope they continue to sleep so well for you. I know how exhausting 1 newborn is. I can't even imagine twins!

Just wait until they are 28 & 30 like mine, it's in the blink of your eyes. That is great news.
Since they all have each other I think it's time for you and Peter to have each other too!

Three months already: wow! :)

And lady, you are crazy! I can't believe everything you sent: my jaw dropped when I saw the size of the box. How can I ever repay you? You certainly made a lot of people happy. I had a lovely time going through them, DH liked watching me do it (ha!), and yesterday my mother-in-law (who's been VERY nervous about my pregnancy) started looking through the box with a big smile on her face.

Thank you very, very much. I can't wait to 'pay it forward.' :)

And thanks for the invitation! If I lived anywhere near you, I'd be honoured to attend!

We were lucky enough to come by a wooden cot with a real horsehair mattress. Many many moons ago!!
It was humpy, it was lumpy, but after a great deal of shape shifting, it led to an unfailing night's sleep for all concerned.
I would imagine that somebody has such an item in the attic, looking for two seems a bit much, but the US is a big country!

Awww, that made me cry! - All of them in the nursery. . . so glad, at least, that they were together.

Thinking of you honey.
