Per Your Request...

I received some questions about the bolsters, so here are some pictures.  To make, per our friend's instructions, take a large, soft towel.  Fold the edges over to accommodate the size of bolster pillow you'll be using.  Make a tight seam. Slip the bolster through. Viola!  You can wash the towel when dirty and, when the kids dont need it anymore, remove the hem and you have two nice size towels!

I think one of the strengths of blogs is that you can share opinions and advice with other folks, so thank you for all the questions and advice and comments about moving Bobby and Maya into twin beds.

We opted to do this over buying another crib.  Our crib was $300 and, now that the kids together have grown out of it, it was either move them into twin beds or buy another crib.  Peter and his brother went to beds early (I think Robert was 8 months old).  We decided that we'd rather spend the money for another crib on other items.  Their beds are only 19" from the floor (including the mattress) so there isnt a huge fall, when you consider the height of toddler beds.  Peter bought "invisible rails" for the sides, so, once the bolsters dont work, we'll move to those.  (And, honestly, I'd like to see those go up sooner rather than later...)

The kids sleep better in their own rooms than they did before.  In the crib, although they loved (and still love during naps) to snuggle, there wasnt a lot of room for them to move around.  In their own beds/room, Maya can sleep without being woken by Bobby, who gets up a bit earlier than she does.  And Bobby doesnt have to worry about being slugged by Maya, who just wants him to hush and go back to sleep!

As to what we'll do when they start to walk around...  I have no idea!  At this point, they love their sleep and want to go "night night".  I'm sure that will change, too...  I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there!!!

I think it's neat, the way you all set it up.Don't worry bout other's.
When they start walking, they will learn to climb and jump too, so don't let other's discredit you!
My three year old son walked at 9 months, and was jumping off the funiture at the same time.People like in inlaws would say, oh that baby is gonna break his leg, but ya know what he kept doing it and never broke his leg!

Just look at those faces :)
I had wondered about when they walk too when a crib can keep them in one spot until they learn to crawl out of them. You are very brave.

Those two photos just made me cry. So precious, all three of you.

J slept on a bolster type arrangement for months inside a crib. It seemed to help her settle. And she sleeps in a bolster on a twin bed at my mom's when I'm at work. x

i think bobby and maya will learn to adapt to the situation they are presented with. they will have been sleeping in their beds for months by the time they can walk and climb. yes, they will climb out of their beds, and they will probably fall sometimes too, but i think they will surprise you and everyone with how adaptable they are.

i do wonder what my own little climber would have done, had she been accustomed to such an arrangement from the get-go, but i'll never know! i like having the crib, though. buying a big-kid bed would have been too much (emotionally) for me. i still can't let myself get too far ahead...

That is also what I love about blogs. . . all the advice sharing and such. I totally understand why you would put the kids in twin beds. Cribs are so darn expensive, and they are so temporary. I'm sure your babies love the arrangement you have for them, and gosh, they are cute. :)

that's a really good pic of you & Maya. Adorable photo of Bobby! He looks like a little boy (not a baby). They are precious!
Hope your mom & family are all okay.

That is an interesting option I never considered before. It doesn't look difficult to make at all.

When J started getting halfway out of his crib at 15 months, our Pedi suggested putting a mattress on the floor, while ensuring everything was safe (and bookcase bolted to the wall), even placing a gate around the mattress as needed. He ended up stopping the climbing until last week, so we're still using a crib, but I've been thinking of just getting a twin instead of changing the crib into the toddler bed. Not sure what we'll do yet.
